Observation #1

The area I am studying is a wide open field with a small creak (irrigation ditch) that runs close to the fence at which I stand for my observations. It is across from cotton Wood Park and is easily visible from the road. My first observation was on May 7th at 5:43 pm. It was about 60 degrees outside. When I started I saw not much of anything. I saw a bunch of dried grass that obviously didn’t have a good sun to water ratio, under enormous cotton wood trees. In the trees there were many nests of many different kind of birds. There were a lot of different sizes, which I think would indicate the size of the birds. The nests were at different levels in the trees as well which I think could relate to the casts system in birds. The little irrigation ditch had a lot of green grasses including Lego grass (my favorite). Most of the insects were by the water. The insects would fly and lightly tap the water I think they were either picking up nutrients or maybe even cooling off. The total area of the field and irragation ditch is about a football field. While I was sitting there I saw a small animal pop its head out from one of the cotton wood trees. It moved stealthily toward the middle of the field, but for some reason jolted back to its starting place. I think there might be a little home or cubby where they hide and hunt. The wind was slightly breezy, but enough to kick up dust. This means that the soil is dry everywhere except around the irrigation ditch. There are some sun flowers or dandelions around the irrigation ditch. And some floating logs in the ditch. I think that it is the time of year where things are just starting to come alive.
